TV, Film and Technology notes

Describe the expansion of multi channel TV in the UK (When it happened and which channels came first)

Multi Channel TV in the UK expanded when BBC was originally launched in 1936 with 18 regional variations , BBC is the world's oldest and largest broadcaster. Its also the country's principal public service broadcaster. As seen below in order of release dates we can clearly see that BBC One is the oldest followed by BBC Two and so on. With the launch of ITV in 1955 this meant a whole new competition for the BBC.

How has this affected the TV industry - in terms of employment and revenue?

The expansion of multi channel has affected the TV industry in various ways. The fact of new channels appearing and increasing in the industry is causing and creating more jobs meaning an increase in employment. With the digital technology around us causing all this to happen. 'Our creative industries are a real success story. They are worth more than £36 billion a year, they generate £70,000 every minute for the UK economy; and they employ 1.5 million people in the UK.' Television back in the olden days wasn't seen as the most popular thing, evidently as the years passed by people slowly started to take an interest in television this obviously meant more money had to be invested into the media business meaning the creation of television shows with Eastenders being the first ever British soap opera to appear on BBC1 in 1985. Eastenders would not have run without actors this meant jobs being created.

How has the internet affected the TV industry - in terms of employment and revenue?
Internet has taking over the TV industry in both ways as in good and bad. In terms of employment more jobs have been created to help boost internet uses on ways to catch up with your favorite shows which you have missed. On demand websites such as 4OD, BBC iPlayer etc. have clearly shown a commitment/dedication to their audiences online this has caused a massive increase in terms of revenue, this is all down to their advertisement. Social networking also plays big role in this as many people are practically on it 24/7 sites such as Facebook, twitter are vital to advertising as television agencies create pages on Facebook or use hash tags on twitter to advertise themselves to inform people that they're around and are asking the audience to tune in.

How has the internet affected how people watch films and TV?
Internet is one word that answers everyone's questions from where do you get this from? How do I find this? Why did you get it from there? and so on the answer to those questions will be? The internet, people revolve around the internet it has been by far taken the most effect on how we watch films and TV today. No need for CD's or videos the internet has given us the ability to watch films and TV on the go. People can choose the option of subscribing monthly to watch their favorite films and TV show's wherever they are! Sites such as Love Film and Net Flix allow this to happen.

Describe potential copyright issues (downloading/effects on revenue etc)?
In terms of copyright issues, it is quite obvious that there will be a huge effect on downloading films, TV shows, music etc. off the internet. Although movie studio revenue has gotten a boost from higher ticket prices for 3D films, overall attendance is down at cinemas there are continual threats of copyright infringement, including pirated DVDs and illegal online streaming of films. The upside for consumers? They get easy, convenient access to an enormous variety of entertainment, all available whenever they want it. Movie lovers can rent a movie for just a fiver or stream a movie directly through their TV using Netflix/Apple TV/ Love Film.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of HD TV?
Advantages:

  • Better picture quality due to higher resolution this means wider screen makes the picture quality more noticeable than a standard sized one but overall a better picture
  • The interlaced scanning technique used by HDTV will help in improving user experience
  • Signal integrity enables digital signals to be stored, transmitted and viewed without changes from the original unlike other media which require analogue to digital conversion and hence the signal degradation is not prominent, so it is better to transmit HD content
  • Compression - Since HD signal are not compressed while transmission, there is no degradation in signal quality
  • An excellent quality of sound resulting from the application of Dolby sound technology gives HDTV an added advantage.
Disadvantages:
  • Increased Cost - HD televisions are often more expensive than regular televisions. Furthermore, most cable and satellite companies charge additional monthly fees for providing HD programming.
  • Additional Equipment - HD televisions typically require an HDMI cable to receive a high definition signal or an HD tuner if you are pulling your signal in from an antenna. Without them, its difficult to take advantage of high-def TV
  • Sufficient Space - Experts recommend sitting a distance from an HDTV equal to two to three times its diagonal length. If your viewing space demands that you sit closer, it could cause headaches
  • Aspect Ratio - Most HDTV's have a 16:9 or "widescreen" aspect ratio. This is wider than some TV shows and movies made before the mid 1950s
  • Incomplete Programming - Many shows aren't broadcast in high definition, including syndicated shows, daytime shows and shows broadcast on many basic cable channels. If you watch these shorts of shows primarily, you may have no need for high definition
How do you think on demand services like Net Flix/Love Film have changed how people watch films?
Due to these on demand services this had made a whole new experience and changed to how people watch their films. They get easy, convenient access to an enormous variety of entertainment, all available whenever they want it. Movie lovers can rent a movie for just a fiver or stream a movie directly through their TV using Netflix/Apple TV/ Love Film. Technology can be credited with ushering in a golden age of choices for movie and music lovers. But for companies in the entertainment business, only those who think creatively about how to sell and deliver content such as Apple, Love Film and Net Flix will reap the benefits.

Do you think new technologies on the whole have improved or damaged the TV and film industries?
In my opinion I would say it has both improved and damaged it reason being on the improvement side is because of the new on demand services that have been introduced such as Net Flix and Love Film. But on a whole technology has changed everything. In just a physical sense there is the possibility of a lot more, and a lot less being done. You take cameras. It used to take four men to operate a camera. Now with high def, one man. That means 75% of the workforce is looking for a job. The medium has changed. The type of entertainments people seek have changed. In terms of damaging the industries issues like online copyright and infringement could prove to be very bad for a companies revenue also the fact now that these on demand services have been put into place not many would be interested in watching from their television but on the go and wherever whenever they want. This could change TV agencies revenue gross by quite a high amount.
