Light Graffiti

In today's lesson as you can see above we created light graffiti. In order to achieve this we were put into a dark room and used one light pretty simple. A high fps rate (10 to 30 seconds) was used to bring these pictures to life.

Series of images which inspired me that I love

All these photos all have a similar scene to them more like. Each one using a similar prop such as the snapback. The first photo uses as what we can see a lit up cigarette to create that smokey effect around him. The first two photos can be seen as taken in a low dimmed room and most light being focused on the model itself whereas the last picture we can clearly see the model is in a white room and black and white effect has been used to make this photo stand out. These shots tell me that they have been taken in a room. Below I have attempted to recreate the images above the idea of the smoke in the room and coming out of my mouth gives off a relaxed feeling.

Shutter zoom

Shutter zoom is another effect done by zooming whilst taking a photo. From these pictures we can tell they are of shutter zoom because of how the background is set out where it is like an explosion kind of background but the subject/object is in focus, for this to be done as you are about to take the picture make sure you zoom in/out just as you are about to take it to get this effect.

Panning techniques

A panning shot is an effect done by the movement of the camera on certain settings. You can recognize a panning shot as the background is blurred out and the moving object is in focus. To do this you must follow the object with your camera and the setting has to be set to shutter priority mode which is the TV option on the dial for a cannon and S for a nikon. The preferred shutter speed is 1/30.

Writing for Film and TV - Task 1

Screenwriter

- Screenwriters are responsible for researching the story, developing the narrative, writing the screenplay, and delivering it, in the required format, to development executives. Screenwriters practice the craft of screenwriting, writing screenplays on which mass media such as films, television programs, comics or video games are based. Screenwriting is a freelance position. Screenwriters must have an in depth understanding of the story, plot and narrative and must be able to demonstrate the creative imagination required to project their vision on to the page, and to breathe life and individuality into their characters and the life choices they make. They need to write visually, using sound and dialogue to support the action in order to create a credible and internally consistent story world.

Screenwriters must be able to write a screenplay in which the reader can 'see' the film unfold cinematically in their imagination. The screenplay must therefore not only feature fascinating characters, an exciting plot, and a great premise for a marketable film, but it must also conform to the logical principles of dramatic construction, as well as to industry expectations regarding format and style. Many screenwriters also work as full or part-time "script doctors", attempting to better a script to suit the desires of a director or studio. For instance, studio management may have a complaint that the motivations of the characters are unclear or that the dialogue is weak.

Production Schedule - Scapegoat

Production Group: Short Film (Group)
Completed by: Rifat Rahman
Date: 15/05/2013

Date
Activity

15-05-2013

Initial Idea
The first task of the project was to research about single camera production documents that were essential to get some evidence on future preferences for my work. We needed to get into groups and make a small brainstorm about what ideas we can use into the practical.
20-05-2013

Initial Idea
After getting into small groups for the short film, we then started to put our initial ideas into action. By these, we put the themes, synopsis, character and setting for the story that we intended to look on and check what was suited and best for the role.

20-05-2013

Initial Idea
We then moved onto the 3rd task of the project. This is the most important criterion of the whole planning for the music video. Each member of the group was required to create a production folder for my idea with the assumption that our idea maybe will go into production. The documents should contain these standard production paperwork e.g.
-        Call Sheets
-        Equipment List
-        Risk Assessments
-        Production Schedule
-        Script
-    Locations/Props List
22-05-2013

Pre Production
One of the first tasks I did was to make the call sheet with one of my peers in the groups who gave me some support on how to do the call sheet. The call sheet is basically it’s a sheet of paper issued to the cast and crew of a film production, informing them where and when they should report for a particular day of shooting.
22-05-2013

Pre Production
The 2nd part of the production document was to create an equipment list for us to make sure what props we use for the filmmaking. This would be a crucial document for us to make sure what props we use for to record the music video itself.
27-05-2013

Pre Production
I then later went to do the risk assessments for the project; it’s an occupational sheet for to assess the risks of any duty for filmmaking. This assessment is carried out to prevent and accident or injury taking place in the future.
27-05-2013

Pre Production
The last document we needed to do for task 3 was to make a script for the actors. This will basically give them the lines they need to rehearse; therefore it will give them a role of what character they will act as.
03-06-2013 - 12-06-2013

Production
We than start to do the production work for the music video. Following on from the initial ideas and planning’s, we will use the specific locations and make sure this production of a music video comes to a success.
19-06-2013

Evaluation
After I done all my production work and all my pre production work and got them out of the way, we then have to undertake a review of your production work and your own performance. (500 words)
You should consider:
·      What role was I given, was the role a well suited one for you?
·      The initial idea of the project?
·       What went well?
·       What went wrong?
·       What would you change?

TV, Film and Technology notes

Describe the expansion of multi channel TV in the UK (When it happened and which channels came first)

Multi Channel TV in the UK expanded when BBC was originally launched in 1936 with 18 regional variations , BBC is the world's oldest and largest broadcaster. Its also the country's principal public service broadcaster. As seen below in order of release dates we can clearly see that BBC One is the oldest followed by BBC Two and so on. With the launch of ITV in 1955 this meant a whole new competition for the BBC.

How has this affected the TV industry - in terms of employment and revenue?

The expansion of multi channel has affected the TV industry in various ways. The fact of new channels appearing and increasing in the industry is causing and creating more jobs meaning an increase in employment. With the digital technology around us causing all this to happen. 'Our creative industries are a real success story. They are worth more than £36 billion a year, they generate £70,000 every minute for the UK economy; and they employ 1.5 million people in the UK.' Television back in the olden days wasn't seen as the most popular thing, evidently as the years passed by people slowly started to take an interest in television this obviously meant more money had to be invested into the media business meaning the creation of television shows with Eastenders being the first ever British soap opera to appear on BBC1 in 1985. Eastenders would not have run without actors this meant jobs being created.

How has the internet affected the TV industry - in terms of employment and revenue?
Internet has taking over the TV industry in both ways as in good and bad. In terms of employment more jobs have been created to help boost internet uses on ways to catch up with your favorite shows which you have missed. On demand websites such as 4OD, BBC iPlayer etc. have clearly shown a commitment/dedication to their audiences online this has caused a massive increase in terms of revenue, this is all down to their advertisement. Social networking also plays big role in this as many people are practically on it 24/7 sites such as Facebook, twitter are vital to advertising as television agencies create pages on Facebook or use hash tags on twitter to advertise themselves to inform people that they're around and are asking the audience to tune in.

How has the internet affected how people watch films and TV?
Internet is one word that answers everyone's questions from where do you get this from? How do I find this? Why did you get it from there? and so on the answer to those questions will be? The internet, people revolve around the internet it has been by far taken the most effect on how we watch films and TV today. No need for CD's or videos the internet has given us the ability to watch films and TV on the go. People can choose the option of subscribing monthly to watch their favorite films and TV show's wherever they are! Sites such as Love Film and Net Flix allow this to happen.

Describe potential copyright issues (downloading/effects on revenue etc)?
In terms of copyright issues, it is quite obvious that there will be a huge effect on downloading films, TV shows, music etc. off the internet. Although movie studio revenue has gotten a boost from higher ticket prices for 3D films, overall attendance is down at cinemas there are continual threats of copyright infringement, including pirated DVDs and illegal online streaming of films. The upside for consumers? They get easy, convenient access to an enormous variety of entertainment, all available whenever they want it. Movie lovers can rent a movie for just a fiver or stream a movie directly through their TV using Netflix/Apple TV/ Love Film.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of HD TV?
Advantages:

  • Better picture quality due to higher resolution this means wider screen makes the picture quality more noticeable than a standard sized one but overall a better picture
  • The interlaced scanning technique used by HDTV will help in improving user experience
  • Signal integrity enables digital signals to be stored, transmitted and viewed without changes from the original unlike other media which require analogue to digital conversion and hence the signal degradation is not prominent, so it is better to transmit HD content
  • Compression - Since HD signal are not compressed while transmission, there is no degradation in signal quality
  • An excellent quality of sound resulting from the application of Dolby sound technology gives HDTV an added advantage.
Disadvantages:
  • Increased Cost - HD televisions are often more expensive than regular televisions. Furthermore, most cable and satellite companies charge additional monthly fees for providing HD programming.
  • Additional Equipment - HD televisions typically require an HDMI cable to receive a high definition signal or an HD tuner if you are pulling your signal in from an antenna. Without them, its difficult to take advantage of high-def TV
  • Sufficient Space - Experts recommend sitting a distance from an HDTV equal to two to three times its diagonal length. If your viewing space demands that you sit closer, it could cause headaches
  • Aspect Ratio - Most HDTV's have a 16:9 or "widescreen" aspect ratio. This is wider than some TV shows and movies made before the mid 1950s
  • Incomplete Programming - Many shows aren't broadcast in high definition, including syndicated shows, daytime shows and shows broadcast on many basic cable channels. If you watch these shorts of shows primarily, you may have no need for high definition
How do you think on demand services like Net Flix/Love Film have changed how people watch films?
Due to these on demand services this had made a whole new experience and changed to how people watch their films. They get easy, convenient access to an enormous variety of entertainment, all available whenever they want it. Movie lovers can rent a movie for just a fiver or stream a movie directly through their TV using Netflix/Apple TV/ Love Film. Technology can be credited with ushering in a golden age of choices for movie and music lovers. But for companies in the entertainment business, only those who think creatively about how to sell and deliver content such as Apple, Love Film and Net Flix will reap the benefits.

Do you think new technologies on the whole have improved or damaged the TV and film industries?
In my opinion I would say it has both improved and damaged it reason being on the improvement side is because of the new on demand services that have been introduced such as Net Flix and Love Film. But on a whole technology has changed everything. In just a physical sense there is the possibility of a lot more, and a lot less being done. You take cameras. It used to take four men to operate a camera. Now with high def, one man. That means 75% of the workforce is looking for a job. The medium has changed. The type of entertainments people seek have changed. In terms of damaging the industries issues like online copyright and infringement could prove to be very bad for a companies revenue also the fact now that these on demand services have been put into place not many would be interested in watching from their television but on the go and wherever whenever they want. This could change TV agencies revenue gross by quite a high amount.

Ident Evaluation

For this task we was asked to produce a stop motion animation using traditional or digital methods. Be able to produce a television ident. We got put into groups/pairs for this task, I was teamed up with Sidique. We discussed different ideas and produced a mind map to jot down all of our ideas. We then put all of these ideas together and put together all the simplistic but also the creative ones, we had a hard thought over it but managed to narrow it down to three options and in the end we decided to go with using some clay and the CWC logo paper cut out idea.

Paper Cut Out Animation from shirlene on Vimeo.

Above is a an example of a paper cut out animation which inspired me to go ahead with my ident being paper cut out as its pretty simple and quite interesting to watch. The narrative behind our ident is pretty straight forward the logo is drawn out which then comes to life and attempts to run away but gets caught and transforms into small pieces who then try again to escape but get caught up and splattered into small clay pieces which is then formed to bring back the CWC logo. We at first had used a DSLR camera to capture our shots but this proved to be very difficult and time consuming. We would always lose our previous position and by mistake move the props by accident causing us to start all over again which was very stressful. So we decided to use a much easier approach by using the iStopMotion webcam and doing our ident on iStopMotion. This proved to be a whole lot easier than our previous method with the DSLR camera. By using the time lapse setting on the program we was able to set how long we wanted our shots in between to be and with it being on continuous mode I was able to assist my partner in positioning the props correctly and in time with the lapse.

The soundtrack that we used was taken from an apple TV commercial which put an effect on the ident making it come to life. Not only did it do that but we wanted to make people feel interested and not get bored. Also by adding sfx to the ident this helped it to sound and look more comical. The whole purpose behind this ident was t show that CWC is a creative and exciting college. One of my main strengths I would say was the pre production we had completed I managed to use my time effectively and plan out everyting on time.  With the feedback received on our ident overall I am happy that the ident went well, the only negativity we had received was the pencil disappearing and Plasticine reappearing towards the end but other than that I am able to identify my strengths and weaknesses which will keep me aware on what I will have to do in the future.
