Who's watching what and why?

The relationship between audiences and films today has a very strong bond, the relationship between the two is an interaction between two producers of meaning, institutions who create meaning, and audiences who not only interpret the film but process the film experience in a variety of ways, for example at the cinema, at home, through the internet or through computer games/consoles. Without audience consumption films today wouldn't be able to reach their highest point of popularity. Now if the audience enjoyed watching their favorite films than the film would achieve maximum success when the audience for that film delights in what the film offers and shows that pleasure in a variety of ways. This gives reason for the audience to purchase later on once it has been released on another platform for example DVD. This gives the movie a good name and reputation. Understanding the film industry and understanding audience activity is vital. The film industry has power yet it needs to listen and to respond to audiences.

High concept films such as titanic are seem to be more predictable in what the narrative/story behind it will be. Features of a high concept film will include:

  • a straightforward, easily pitched and easily comprehended story
Watching movies is one of the most popular hobbies worldwide. Now many people wonder why and ask themselves the same question time and time again, whats with movies that make people want to keep watching even if they have seen the same plot before? Well using the example of a horror film I'll talk about the advantages and how this works to bring audience back again and again. The advantage of watching a horror film starts with the fact that movies can open up your mind and fill it with a wide variety of thoughts, ideas and imagination. Now your watching a horror movie which you bought on DVD. As you are watching the film you can feel the build in tension inside of you and after the movie, You will most definitely find that the tension is still in the air, you will feel the chillness running down your skin. When you close your eyes you would even realize that the scenes from that movie you have watched is still running inside your head.

The audience of today will do a lot to follow and support their beloved films and by doing so they all do it via social networking sites such as Facebook, twitter, Myspace and many others which will support big named films. Review sites such as IMDB (Internet Movie Data Base) is a great way to get reviews and comments off experts and their thoughts about the film. People can sign up to this site and keep up to date on their favorite films and find out more info about them, this site is linked to Facebook and Twitter again another boost for promoting. Now the protagonist of all films will instantly be recognized on Twitter and Facebook each having their own account and like page. Audiences/fans will follow their favorite actor and see what there getting up to in their lives tweeting and posting every little info. Facebook works slightly different as the member will have to like the page and eventually this fan page will build up gaining popularity from all over the world as Facebook is a worldwide social able site people are able to talk to each other and how they feel about the their best films. Now we can see how far the audience will go to promote and support their beloved films.

Evaluation

Our original idea was to advertise and intending on doing so was Coca-Cola because at first we as a group had thought of it and this was one of our first ideas. We agreed on using Coca-Cola as our chosen product as we felt it would be quite easy going and comfortable to work with. After we'd chosen our product we then drew out on a storyboard how our advertisement will pan out and come out to be. After fully plotting out our idea onto our storyboard, Sue had told everyone in the class that the completion of this advertisement has to be done within a week. Now with less time than we had expected we decided as a group to not advance with the development of this idea. We were not faithful to our original idea, reason being is because of the amount of lesson time that we was given stopped us from progressing on with the originality of the idea of using Coca-Cola.

In my opinion I would say that our advert was very effective because we had used a specific persuasive technique that you wouldn't see as much in other advertisements and that is repetition, which we had gained knowledge from while Sue had introduced the project to us. We communicated with a audience of coffee consumers around the world aged between 17-40. The use of different times which had been used and shown at the bottom of every shot was to indicate how tasty a coffee can be for a customer to return all the time on the same day, this was one approach we were attempting to illustrate to show to our target audience. The slogan can be seen as a direct message to the chosen target audience of 17-40 year olds.

Technical and aesthetic qualities I am most proud of is the persuasive technique of repetition that was used by the date and different times of the characters visiting Costa Coffee. This itself indicates the great taste and quality of Costa Coffee making it a good enough reason for customers/target audience to purchase the product. A down side to our advertisement which I feel hasn't met a high standard is the minimal use of the five shot rule which we had learnt earlier on during the process of this course. I felt that if this had been added than it would make an effecting contribution to the technical qualities with many other factors but this being the main one. I intend to improve on it by adding more shots particularly the five shot rule making our commercial appear more professionally for our target audience to watch more happily and by doing so to also achieve a a higher grade.

In comparison to a professional TV advertisement our advert will lack in still videoing and lack of shots, seeing as only three shots had been used in our one (Close up, medium shot, high angle shot) you would instantly assume the commercial wasn't met to a high standard whereas in a professional commercial you would realise the difference within watching ten seconds into the advert where all five shots are clearly used and still videoing is used making it more attractive and appealing to watch for the target audience.
