Music Video - Evaluation

We were given a task to shoot a music video and have it completed in a matter of four and a half weeks. So planning had to be started as soon as possible we initially thought of the idea to record a love hate relationship style kind of video but after some brief planning we realized we did not have the location or resources we needed so ended up re-planning and came up with a narrative of two characters who both receive a phone call that each should pick up a package...and that's where the story unfolds.

We had to experiment with various different music videos and choose from which will suit our idea. With long hours of research we finally decided to use the hit song Linkin Park - Lost. We went with this song as it gave an intense feeling and a more suspense into what will the narrative will generally be, giving the audience that intense feeling. With a loss of a team member everything had to be kept simplistic but most importantly a unique idea. On a normal college day a student and his friends are having a conversation like normal teenagers about life and daily activities that they get up to until he reaches a phone call from an unknown caller/number. The caller explains to him that he will need to pick up a package from the third floor of the college building (City of Westminster College) so he gives his goodbyes to his fellow friends and goes on the hunt for the package.

In another part of the college another student is minding his own business when he also receives a call from an unknown number, with a lost look on his face knowing he doesn't usually receives unknown calls he casually answers and hears a man with a disguised voice asking him to go to the third floor and also pick up a package so he without hesitation goes on his short journey to find the package. So Rifat makes his way upstairs to the third floor and Rhandall makes his way down. Different shots are made during his journey up, this was to show plus express his emotions and give the audience a feeling if they were put in a situation like that. First to reach the package was Rifat and then seconds after Rhandall comes through the door and points out to Rifat that the package belongs to him with an angry face. This confuses Rifat as he thinks that he is the only that is meant to pick up the package but he doesn't let that get to him so he shakes his head and walks off until he is stopped and grabbed by Rhandall then being attacked with Rhandall throwing a punch which leaves Rifat temporarily unconscious. With the use of the drums and bass in the background this builds up adrenaline and an excitement feeling in the atmosphere.

As Rhandall casually walks over him knowing he is unconscious is caught by surprise as he is grabbed by the foot and falls over Rifat immediately reaches for the package and attempts to make a break for it but is stopped by Rhandall, and so the fight scene begins...different shots were used in this particular area of the video to show emotions on the two characters faces this will give an insight into how both Rifat and Rhandall are feeling. Seconds later with Rhandall in pursuit they both race down the stairs unfortunately things take a turn and Rifat attempts a jump which makes him trip and injure himself as the music is coming to a close Rifat is given that one final blow by Rhandall and leaves him for dead.

Feedback and responses to how the music video could be improved and what was good about it was gathered. A common response was "transitions and color effects could be added." Although the fact that it was shot in one day with just a team of two we was limited to our options and knowing we had a very tight deadline not much could be done with the editing either but we tried our best to add as much as we could. In future reference, we as a team will make sure that more effects and transitions are added to make the video more entertaining and interesting to the audience. On the positive side many students said "Very good narrative and shots", "I liked the narrative..", "Well the narrative was continuous which I liked because it had some sense into its storyline."  This gave me and my team a bit more confidence into knowing that some of our efforts had paid off.

A strength that I believe for my music video is that even when we was struggling to the end of the near deadline, we was very initiative with our ideas and quickly put down our ideas into action and still had creative thoughts into our plans and it helped not only that a person from our group left and gave us more difficulties but it also gave us the inspiration and commitment for us to never give up and still get a successful grade within the project, not only that but I would also review it over and over again to review little mistakes that may prevent our video to be interesting, also by taking on thoughts of other crew members and agree on what and what not should be included made it turn out how it is now. "Teamwork is the key to success." quotes like these inspire me to work hard achieve more out of myself knowing I have the ability, by gaining people's opinions and feedback on our music video we would be able to improve it and show that there is a process of it being developed.

A weakness for my music video could be the very tight deadline, the lack of effects and transitions that were used. Again with a loss of a crew member a perfect video could not be produced. But we attempted to carry on and think of an idea as soon as possible and eventually completing the video on time. Location was at a minimum, recording took place at City Of Westminster College although if more time was given then as a student stated "..maybe some outdoor shots would of summed up the whole scenario because it would of made it look more stylish and entice audience to be interested more into the music video.." we could have accomplished this and made the music video even better than how it is.

Overall I think that my music video was a success although I believe that it could have been produced even better but many factors limited us to doing such things so a big letdown due to that. Taking on board what fellow students and teachers have said about our music video this wont stop me from making more videos.

  1. Very good narrative and shots, the acting was quite comedic. Improvements could be made with continuity and there could be some transitions and coulour effects added.

  2. I liked the narrative, favourite part is when you were fighting as it had good camera shots.
only thing that I didn't understanding was the floor numbers as it wasn't in order.

  3. Well the narrative was continuous which I liked because it had some sense into its storyline. However a bit of more transitions and maybe some outdoor camera shots would of summed up the whole scenario because it would of made it look more stylish and entice audience to be interested more into the music video, however it was good.
